Monday Morning Music: Brave

There are few things more brave than dancing like crazy in a public place.

One of them may be admitting I really like the song and the video for “Brave” by Sara Bareilles.

Sara Bareilles’ song and album have improbably garnered a slew of Grammy nominations for this year’s awards.

You may not even realize you’ve heard “Brave” until you recognize it as the jingle for all the new Windows commercials you’ve seen during every commercial break of NFL football and just about everything else you watch on television.

I’m not too proud to say “Brave” is a really catchy song. I find myself singing the chorus loudly much to my fiance’s annoyance. I secretly wish it would make it’s way onto the music rotation at the department store I work at. (It’s more tolerable than at least half the songs I have to listen to at work.)

I think I like the music video even more than the song. In it, a number of normal people find themselves dancing to their own beat in the middle of a study hall, a shopping mall, a public square, and more.

When we dance we set aside our inhibitions. We lay down the notion of not wanting to look like a fool. We follow the spirit inside of us and move our body in a joyful manner.

Dancing, despite what the movie “Footloose” tells you, is encouraged by God as an appropriate form of celebration and praise throughout the Bible.

Praise God with the tambourine and dancing; praise Him with strings and flutes! Praise Him with a clash of cymbals; praise Him with loud clanging cymbals. Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord! (Psalm 150:4-6)

If God has given you breath, than you have something to be thankful for. You have something to dance over. You are loved by your Creator.

This Monday, stop worrying about all the things you can’t do. Forget about all the items on your to-do list you haven’t checked off. Let go of all the things on your Clear app you haven’t swiped away yet.

Instead of pretending to be a superhero and thinking you can do it all, be brave enough to be content in you are. Lay down your costume and dance in your true identity. Rejoice in your flaws; see them as cracks for God’s light to shine through in your life.

Don’t be afraid of what lies before you this Monday.

Don’t get depressed over what you don’t get done.

Ignore the world’s expectations. Be content. Be brave. Be full of praise.

Just dance.

Where do you need to let your guard down? How can you be brave today?
