Give Thanks For Youth Camp

Earlier this morning a dozen teenagers were baptized in the ocean on Daytona Beach.

It was incredible to witness. But it’s not unique.

Week after week and day after day all summer long tireless youth pastors, parents, college students, and other volunteers are pouring their lives into students. Because of their passion, and because of the grace of the Lord, teenagers across the world are being rescued.

It’s called Youth Camp. It looks a little something like this:

This is a taste of the Youth Camp I’ve been serving with this past week as a game and recreation leader. I’m completely spent from the whole process. And I can’t stop smiling.

In just a few weeks I’ll be taking ten of my own students to Big Stuf camp in Panama City Beach. I pray (and I have faith) God will work in their lives as well.

Today let’s give thanks for Youth Camp. Let’s give thanks for the bands, the speakers, the skit leaders, the rec leaders, the cooks, the nurses, the janitors, the sound techs, the small group leaders, and everyone else who works to bring a life changing experience for teenagers every day across the world this summer.

Let’s give thanks for the students who will never forget these camps.

Let’s give thanks for the real salvation Jesus brings through the beautiful chaos of Youth Camp.

Lift up a prayer today for everyone at Youth Camp today. Lift up a praise knowing in full confidence God is moving in students across the world. Rejoice.

Happy Friday.

60 Seconds Of Gratitude

Sometimes when I hear the alarm clanging on my iPhone I dread the idea of getting out of bed. But I can’t keep hitting the snooze button.

IMG_0572There’s a dog in my face who needs to be walked. He doesn’t care how late I stayed up or how hard I’ve been working lately. He expects me to take him outside as soon as the alarm goes off whether I like it or not.

Turns out walks with Roc are exactly what I need to kickstart my morning.

Those 10 minutes walking outside with no distractions give me a perfect chance to pray. Morning walks with Roc are a daily quiet time to take account of what’s in store fore the day. They’re also a time to give thanks to God for His many blessings.

You may not have the luxury of a morning walk time to get your heart in tune with God. No worries. Here’s another way you can get the same benefits:

Try this exercise today when you feel overwhelmed. Stop whatever you’re doing and put a timer on your phone for 60 seconds. Get out a pen and a piece of paper. Start the timer and begin writing down as many things you’re thankful for as you can in that minute.

You’ll be amazed at how quickly your perspective can shift. 60 seconds of gratitude can turn your day around. Taking register of all you have to be thankful for can be the boost you need to get over the hump of frustration.

Try it out. Take a minute. It’s not an exercise I do everyday, but it’s one I go back to whenever I lose perspective on how lucky I am.

No matter where you are in life I bet you can fill up 60 seconds with gratitude. I also bet doing so will change your entire day.

Happy Friday.

All You Need To Be A Great Friend

Kermit+The+Frog++Fozzie+Bear+Jim+Henson+Frank+Oz+ker+fozThere’s a special kind of love that exists between friends. Friends are the only people in our lives we choose to love.

You’re born into your family’s love. You may or may not love them. They may or may not love you back. If you do love them, it’s not because you chose them to be your family above anyone else.

When you fall in love you usually can’t help yourself. Something stirs in your heart. You’re romantically drawn to the person of your dreams. You don’t always choose who you fall in love with.

Friends are a different story.

When I was in elementary school, I had certain qualifications a person had to meet to become my friend. I quite literally would walk around the playground at recess with potential pals and interview them for a position in my social circle. The three major qualifications for being my friend were:

– You had to like X-Men.

– You had to like wrestling.

– You had to like country music.

These three things of course being the most important things in my life at the age of 8. If you were a fan of all three of these, congratulations: you and I were about to be buds.

No matter how old you are, you still get to choose your friends. You’re not forced to love these people as family or as a spouse. Instead you think so highly of them that you want to associate with them on a regular basis without any patriarchal or romantic ties.

And to think, that’s how Jesus thinks of us:

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. (John 15:12-15)

Jesus calls us His friends, and this entails a very special type of love. He does not have to love us; He chooses to love us intentionally.

Jesus also says He does not look down on us as servants, though we are called and should be moved to serve Him. Instead He calls us into His inner circle, sharing great truths and secrets with us from His dad like any best friend would.

Read through the gospels and you’ll see Jesus being a friend a friend would like to have. He talks with the disciples. He eats with them. He walks with them. He parties with them. He spends the night with them. He challenges them. He listens to them. He forgives them. He ultimately gives His life for them. And He does all those same things for us – His friends.

What turns an average friend into a great friend? The answer lies in how Jesus treated His friends: He gave to them out of love without any regard for Himself, up to and including His own life.

It may seem impossible to love your friends the same way that Christ did. But that’s what the holy spirit is for. We can call on our friend Jesus anytime we want, since His spirit lives inside of us.

So here’s a piece of friendly advice – try loving your friends unselfishly, no matter how outlandish it may seem. Boldly love your friends the way you want to be loved. Love them without expecting anything back in return. You’ll gain more from it than you give.

What do you think makes a great friend? What sort of friends have modeled Jesus to you?

What’s Your Main Event?

Everything must end.

So many moments on WWE Raw this past Monday pointed toward finality.

Daniel Bryan and Kane calling off their partnership. CM Punk and Paul Heyman ending their business relationship. Alberto Del Rio abandoning the fans. Mark Henry nearly retiring (before going back to being the most awesome man on the planet).

Nothing lasts forever in wrestling. No title reign. No undefeated streak. No partnership. No physique. No popularity. Nothing.

All manner of factors contribute to the fluid nature of wrestling. Constantly shifting storylines. Expiring contracts. Flip-flopping fans. Injuries. And, all too often, death.

The heroes and Hulks of my youth no longer stand tall. There are no Stones or Rocks which won’t be tumbled by time. If you enjoy something in the world of wrestling, enjoy it while it lasts.

God is eternal. We are not. Continue reading

The Greatest Catchphrase Of All Time

“I’ll be back.”

“I could’ve been a contender!”

“Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

“May the force be with you.”

“Houston, we have a problem.”

In 2005 the American Film Institute named the top 100 movie quotes of all time. You probably remember every one of those quotes and maybe 100 more depending on how big of a film buff you are.

What is it that makes these catchphrases so memorable? Continue reading

Homer Simpson: Father Of The Year

http://www.hulu.com/watch/33378

Homer Simpson. Always a model for fatherhood. Why, just in this clip above, he shows us 3 of the most important characteristics of a great father.

A father always makes time to give advice to his child. A father is always ready to teach his child. A father is willing to endure extreme pain for his child.

Ok, so he’s not always perfect. But he does what he can with what he has.

As long as you’re doing your best with your kids and not giving up, you should be commended. If you’re at least as good a dad as Homer Simpson then you have reason to celebrate this Father’s Day.

Relax and rejoice. The children of the world appreciate you. No one knows exactly how to do what you’re doing. But we’re glad you’re trying.

Happy Father’s Day.

My Father, The Gamer

This year parents across the country will have to make one of the most important decisions of their lives for their children:

Xbox One or Playstation 4?

When the two next-gen systems are released in the fall gamers will be divided on which is the superior system. Eager fans will camp outside electronic stores to be the first on the block to have their preferred console.

It happened with the Xbox 360 and the PS3. And the original Xbox and PS2. And so on and so on.

It will happen again for whatever the next great advancement in gaming technology will be when these systems get discarded. Yes, even the Xbox One and PS4, which seem revolutionary and impossible to top at this point, will eventually become paperweights at the feet of the next great system.

Perhaps, though, for one child this year one game on one system will have as profound an impact on their lives as the video game I wanted more than any other when I was young. Continue reading

What Is Your Definition?

960016_10152877237925273_1466826151_nI’ve been drinking ridiculous amounts of coffee the past few weeks.

My commitments to work, family, and friends keep piling up. Blog posts don’t just magically appear. There are Arrested Development episodes to be watched. Sleep takes a backseat. Coffee becomes a fine friend.

If you had told me coffee would be my life preserver through this time a few years ago, I would have done a spit take of whatever non-coffee beverage I would have been drinking at the time.

For the first 20 or so years of my life I despised coffee. Hated the taste of it. Hated the idea of it. My parents were never java drinkers so it was never prevalent in my house.

One morning when I was in elementary school I asked if my mom could would make me a cup of coffee. I’d heard so much about these magical beans and the powerful drink they produced.

She made me a cup of strong black coffee. One sip was all I needed to know I never wanted to so much as smell coffee again. Continue reading

The Hollow Treasures Of Storage Wars

Why is “Storage Wars” one of the most popular shows on television? A&E’s megahit has turned the relatively obscure practice of bidding on expired storage units into the most popular game show on television.

Each episode builds up the anticipation of not only finding out the contents of each unit, but then learning just how much each unit is worth (though my biggest problem with the show is the values are often dubious in their interpretation).

Secretly everyone watching considers becoming a storage unit bidder. You think to yourself, “Is it really that easy? Spend a hundred bucks on a storage unit and turn a couple thousand dollars profit?

I thought about “Storage Wars” quite a bit as I prepared for our church’s yard sale this past weekend. At one point I even met a church member at her storage unit to pick up some items.

She had not been to the unit in years. When she unlocked the door the mountainous contents were overwhelming. Continue reading
