What To Do When You’re The Worst At Fantasy Football

Mondays are pretty good for me.

On Mondays I wake up to a cup of coffee from Buona Caffe, take a long walk with my dog Roc, and plan out a week full of possibilities.

On Mondays I usually get a chance to go running and spend some time working on future blog posts.

On Mondays I gather with my closest friends and watch wrestling, something that a bunch of guys in their mid-twenties are probably too old to still do.

On Mondays the hopes of a new week are abloom. The problems of the week before have passed.

It’s Tuesdays that I hate.

Every Tuesday during the fall I wake up to dire news. Each Tuesday morning I open up my computer and start my day depressed. That’s because on Tuesdays I find out my Fantasy Football fate. Continue reading

Get Out Of The Shower

It’s Friday.

You need all the help you can to make it to the weekend.

You take a few extra breaks. Watch a few more funny videos than usual. Stalk a few more people on Facebook than normal.

Before you know it, it’s 5:00. The day is gone. Nothing got done.

I’ve been there. Trust me. So has Wes Welker:

(Click Here if you can’t see the video above.)

Here’s the new plan: don’t waste your day in the shower. Make Friday count. Don’t spend too much time relaxing today that you miss out on opportunities to really get stuff done.

The weekend is coming in just a few hours. You deserve your weekend after all you’ve done this week. Enjoy it. Rest.

But you have just a little bit more to do. Go do it. Level up before you head home today.

Happy Friday. Continue reading

Laugh Out Loud

(Click Here if you can’t see the video above.)

It’s Friday.

You need to laugh out loud today.

It doesn’t matter what type of laugh you have. God made you with that laugh in your DNA.

Don’t be ashamed of it. Let it out in all it’s glory.

You may have a lot on your plate today. You may be hurting. You may be devastated. You may be bored. You may be stressed.

Wherever you are, take 5 minutes to just laugh a little bit. Find the funniest video you can on Youtube. Put on your favorite episode of Parks and Recreation. Find a classic comedy on Netflix or at a Redbox. Let the healing power of laughter cover over your hurt.

Laugh big and strong and silly today.

Happy Friday.

A Human’s Lesson From DOGTV

My dog has his own tv channel to watch.

DOGTV is a 24 hour network designed with canines in mind. The programs are set up like a preschool show with humans speaking directly to dogs at home, bright colors beaming out, and stimulating images and noises intended to keep a dog at a play while the owner is away.

Programs on the network include “Relaxation”, “Stimulation”, and “Exposure”

In fact, it’s kind of peaceful just to leave on in the background. “Relaxation” features an hour of waterfalls, lush fields, classical music, and video of sleeping dogs. (Also – that logo. Just perfect.)

If only there were some sort of dog evangelism on Sunday mornings! I just need to be sure my dog is going to Heaven one day…

The DOGTV website has all sorts of scientific and psychological evidence as to why their programming is good for your dog. Sure. I buy all that. I’ll keep turning DOGTV on when I leave the house

But here’s the thing: my dog doesn’t need DOGTV to be happy. A dog needs food and water and rest and adventure.

Audio and visual stimulation while the owner is away helps. I’m sure doggie pedicures and Thundershirts are nice too. They’re just not necessary.

I took my dog to a local dog park last week. He enjoyed it almost as much as I did. He ran all around the perimeter of the park peeing on every inch of the fence and sniffing every tree and leaf. I sat on a bench and journaled in the fresh air and ignored my phone for an hour. Life was perfect.

I think sometimes we lose ourselves in things we don’t need. I used to think I needed every channel on my tv just in case I missed the next great tv show.

Now I kind of think human tv should be more like DOGTV. A little stimulation every day, but more time focusing on relaxation and exposure to the real world.

There’s a billboard in my town for the local cable company. They’re advertising a DVR that lets you record four shows at once while still watching a fifth different show.

If you think you need to record four shows at once while watching another one, you’re watching too much tv. Even a dog could recognize that.

What do you really need to live? What’s something material you think you could not live without? Try giving it up for the afternoon. See what really happens.

Relearning To Fly

If you can’t fly then run. If you can’t run then walk. If you can’t walk then crawl. But whatever you do you have to keep moving forward. – Martin Luther King, Jr.

photo-2Have you ever flown before? Not literally in an airplane. I’m talking about the sensation that comes when you’re gliding through life, when joy comes effortlessly, when you feel as if you’re floating off the ground.

When I go out for a run and I really get in the groove, that’s when I feel like I’m flying.

Once upon a time I ran a half marathon. Way back in 2011 I sweated my way across the finish line of the Greenwood, SC Half Marathon in a half-decent time of 2:12:36.

I couldn’t believe it. I would have been happy to finish under the 3 hour mark.

For years I wavered on whether or not I was capable of doing a 13.1 mile run. I trained on and off, never really breaking an 8 mile run at the most.

Finally I made a pact with a few students of mine. We decided we would do this together.

The feeling on the other side of the finish line was elation. I could not believe I had really completed the race. I had immediate plans to get back into training for the next one.

It’s over 2 years later and I still haven’t run the sequel. Continue reading

POP GOD POPcast: Episode 7 – Rick McKee

slide.001Welcome to Episode 7 of the POP GOD POPcast – an exploration into the lives of people seeking God in the present tense.

This week’s guest is Rick McKee. Rick is the political cartoonist at The Augusta Chronicle, one of the longest running newspapers in the south. Rick’s story is all about faith and perseverance in the pursuit of a dream. We talk about his journey from a 12-year-old drawing pictures in the back of a classroom to a cartoonist published in the Washington Post and USA Today. Plus we chat about the creative process of a daily political cartoon, the current state of the newspaper business, and some “insider” Augusta history. Enjoy this look at a creative avenue you’ve probably never learned about before.

I’m so excited to open up POP GOD and share more stories of people seeking God in the present tense. I’d love to hear your feedback. Leave me a comment and let me know how to improve things, what you’d like to hear discussed, and give me your ideas as to who you’d like to see on the POPcast.

Keep Going, Keep Going, Keep Going

(Click Here if you can’t see the video above.)

It’s Friday.

Here’s a tiny poem of inspiration from Kid President. He’s a kid who, with the help of his family and a video camera, is changing the world.

You could slack off today knowing the weekend is just a few hours away.

Or you could make the world a better place.

Whatever you’re going through, keep going.

Today may be the day the walls come down.

Happy Friday.

(And as a bonus bit of wisdom, here’s Kid President reminding us every important meeting should end with a dance.)

The Braves and The (Almost) Certain Victory

photo-1The Braves are going to win.

Every game it’s just understood – The Braves got this.

I don’t even have to check the score anymore.

Did the Braves play a game last night? Then they won. It doesn’t matter if it was 10-0 in the bottom of the ninth. This year’s Braves team are the comeback kings.

Maybe it’s the magic of the new Waffle House inside Turner Field. Maybe it’s folk hero Evan Gattis, a.k.a. El Oso Blanco. Who knows?

It’s August 22 and they’ve already claimed the division. Not technically, but still, stats trackers give the Braves 100% chance of winning their division. They are saying there is absolutely no chance in the next 6 weeks another team will usurp their lead.

The Braves will win the division. They will win the league series and then the World Series. I just know it.

Or maybe not. I don’t know. Continue reading
