You Can’t Lose

You’ve just won the Super Bowl. The confetti is raining down. Teammates, friends, and family members are rushing to the field. The sideline reporter puts her microphone to your face and asks how you’re feeling:

“Well, I know we just won the Super Bowl and all, but boy was our defense terrible out there. There was pretty much no protection from our offensive line either. I could not believe the plays our coaches were calling. Punting on 4th and 1, are you serious? And the officials, don’t get me started on the officials. Worst officiating I’ve ever seen in a big game.”

Yeah, no.

No one complains after they win the Super Bowl. A winner might complain after any other game. There is always room to improve before the next game, even if you won.

But no one complains after they win the Super Bowl.

That’s because they’ve won the ultimate victory. The complaints don’t matter any more. They have already won the ultimate prize.
So why should you complain? No, seriously, why? Because if you’re a Christian, you have already won. Continue reading

Sing Like A Second Grader

(Click Here if you can’t see the video above.)

It’s Friday.

Whatever you’ve been through this week, it’s time to sing.

You may be afraid to let your voice be heard. You may be ashamed of how you sound. You may think you have no musical ability.

You need to go back. Go back to elementary school. Go back to the place where sunny days sweep the clouds away. Go back to a world where cookie monsters and people coexist. Go back to a time where you couldn’t get kicked out of chorus no matter what noises came out of your mouth.

Let the doubts and voices in your head drift away. Abandon yourself to childlike joy.

Take a page out of Jimmy Fallon’s book. Grab a kazoo and let it all out. Roll down the windows and sing like a second grader today.

Happy Friday.

(If Jimmy Fallon, The Roots, and the Sesame Street cast can’t put a smile on your face, here’s a couple of other classroom renditions from “Late Night” featuring Carly Rae Jepsen and Robin Thicke.) Continue reading

How To Save Walter White

GQ

For months the internet has been breaking down “Breaking Bad”, the landmark television drama which comes to an end this Sunday.

What more really needs to be said about the greatest tv drama of all time (no argument)? What new perspective can anyone possibly offer on the deconstruction of Walter White?

Well, probably none. That being said, here’s my final, personal take on the man they call Heisenberg: This all could have been avoided. Continue reading

Life On The Leash

photo-2You’d think a dog would hate a leash.

Not my dog.

By definition a leash keeps a dog from moving freely, tying them to where their owner is walking. Seems like something which would annoy a dog in theory.

When I pull out the leash The Roc recognizes what’s about to happen. I don’t even have to say a word.

He knows where I keep the leash. He knows when I’m going for it.

Wherever he is he starts running. His heart starts racing. His legs can’t contain themselves.

We’re going to his favorite place. We’re going outside. Continue reading

A Lesson On Being Joyful From Grover and Dave Matthews

(Click Here if you can’t see the video above)

Are you feeling a feeling that’s not a very good feeling?

Do you have a friend who’s also feeling a feeling that’s not a very good feeling?

You can’t always be happy. Even if you live on Sesame Street.

That’s ok. God never asked us to be happy always.

Instead He calls us to be joyful in Him always.

There’s a huge difference.

Like Grover and Dave Matthews, we won’t always get what we wish for.

Sometimes that make us sad. Sometimes we need a friend to come by and remind us even though we don’t have a rocket ship, we’re still living on Sesame Street, and that in itself is pretty amazing.

It’s Friday. Your weekend may not have gone like you wanted. You’re not the superhero you want to be. But look around. Take just 60 seconds to count your blessings. You’ll be overwhelmed.

Find a friend who’s feeling the same feeling as you. Call them. Text them. Sit with them. Sing with them. Rejoice with them.

Happy Friday.

Ahem. I mean Joyful Friday.

The Pumpkin Spice Dilemma

photo-3I love the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte.

I just don’t love it yet.

2013 marks the tenth anniversary of the Starbucks signature fall drink. This year also marks the earliest Starbucks has ever rolled out the Pumpkin Spice Latte.

It feels too early to me. I have a hard time sipping a Pumpkin flavored drink when its still 103 degrees outside. Something just doesn’t jive between my brain, body, and taste buds.

Seems like the signifiers of the holiday season roll in earlier and earlier each year. Continue reading

Fail Like A Comedian

(Click Here if you can’t see the video above.)

It’s Friday.

You may think you’ve made it through the week safely.

You may stand up before the world with the best of intentions, trying to make your audience laugh.

But watch out. Haters don’t take a day off.

Even with the best intentions and preparation you will still be booed. You will still be heckled. You may even fail completely.

If you fail today, take a lesson from great comedians like Jim Gaffigan and Patton Oswalt and fail spectacularly. Go ahead and bomb. Let yourself be knocked down a few pegs and rise up stronger.

And when it all falls apart, smile and remember you’re gonna make some great material out of this failure in the future.

Happy Friday.
